'Heavy live, soul, jazz, afro, latin & caribbean sounds'!

Canada's hardest-working super-group, the Souljazz Orchestra, have been perfecting their signature sound for over a decade now: a percussive explosion of Soul, Jazz, Afro, Latin and Caribbean rhythms, driven by majestic horn-drenched melodies, all backed by an arsenal of overheated primitive keyboards.

The multicultural collective returns at full throttle this year with Solidarity, a dynamite new collaborative album released by UK-based Strut Records, featuring a range of unique artists connected to the group through Canada's vibrant underground scene, yet hailing from a variety of backgrounds, from Senegal to Brazil to Jamaica and beyond. These guests were the catalyst for memorable artistic exchange, where the group remained rooted in rhythmically rich musical traditions of the past, but kept their eyes firmly on the future, pushing the boundaries of Soul, Jazz and Tropical styles with a fresh set of heavyweight new songs, unified by an underlying message of positive social change.

Now celebrating their 10th year, the Souljazz Orchestra continue their impressive run of memorable albums. Breaking through on Toronto label Do Right!, Freedom No Go Die (2006, featuring the huge single 'Mista President') and Manifesto (2008) set the bar high. Rising Sun (2010), their first album with Strut Records, was subsequently recognised as a landmark in deep, spiritual Afro Jazz. Meanwhile, as a live unit, years of relentless touring have formed the Ottawa-based combo into an in-demand fixture at venues and festivals worldwide.

From subtle to sumptuous on piano & percussion.

Brazilian piano star Benjamim Taubkin has been making waves with his sensual mix of lush traditional arrangements laced with cutting edge technique and contemporary harmony. For this tour he has teamed up with exhilarating and innovative percussionist Adriano Adewale, who has shared the stage with Seu Jorge, Oliver Mtukudzi and Jools Holland, among others. Their work together evolves around the play of push and pull between two instruments which are often considered the backbone of bossa nova. Experimental and improvised yet focused on building soundscapes, harmonies and melodies, this is music that effortlessly transforms itself from solid to liquid and from earth to ether.

Hugh Masekela is one the great survivors of the generation of South African jazz players who escaped the apartheid system back in the 1960s and made their base in the USA or Europe bringing a love of African melodies into their jazz style.

Hear him in an intimate setting with master pianist Larry Willis, a partnership that goes back to their days together at college in New York and combines Masekela’s exuberance with Willis’ elegant solos.

MUNTU VALDO (in association with Celebrating Sanctuary)

MAC Birmingham (Midlands Arts Centre), Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham, B12 9QH

£8         (Concessions: £6)

http://www.macarts.co.uk/event/muntu-valdo--in-association-with-celebrating-sanctuary

Muntu Valdo's music is rooted in the blues, mixing African traditions with striking modernity and technical mastery.  He's played with some of the great names of African music including Ali Farka Touré, Manu Dibango and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and returns tonight with a mesmerising solo set mixing intricate African guitar lines with loops and samples to create sun-kissed groove heavy Sawa Blues.

His last album The One & The Many was released by Warner Jazz.

Muntu Valdo belongs to the Sawa community who populate the length of Cameroon’s coastline along the Gulf of Guinea.

It was at the age of 8yrs old, sat under a huge mango tree in the ‘Cité Verte’ of Yaoundé that Muntu played his first notes on an old, three-stringed guitar made of plasterboard and fishing wire.

Touring extensively (including UK wide tours supporting Richard Bona in 2008, Staff Benda Bilili in 2009 and LadySmith Black Mambazo in 2011) as a solo performer, Muntu became fascinated by an ever more acute awareness of his inseparability from everything and everyone and the inspiration behind new album, The One & The Many, was born.

All ten tracks of the new album pay testimony to Muntu’s faith in the power of the individual to harness the power of the many. Completed by his hand alone, the album was written and produced by him, all instruments and all vocals performed by him.  With this touchingly honest new album Muntu Valdo successfully pulls together a rich diversity of elements and environments and commands us to recognise an artist deeply rooted in the riches of his heritage and culture, whilst striving for modernity, open to and pushing towards the future.

With The One & The Many, Muntu Valdo wills us to stand up and unleash the power of the many inside each and every one of us.

Good music travels fast…keep up!  www.myspace.com/muntuvaldo

Making Tracks:  BALLAKÉ SISSOKO - AT PEACE - Classical Soundscapes of African Beauty

Ballaké Sissoko is one of Mali's greatest exponents of the kora, the 21-stringed harp of the Manding people. Whilst his music is steeped in ancient West African traditions, this modest and softspoken man is also a staunch innovator and musical  He earned his reputation by performing solo, with Toumani Diabaté, Taj Mahal, Ludovico Einaudi, and more recently, in an award-winning collaboration with French cellist Vincent Segal.  For his latest project, At Peace, Sissoko gathers trusted, long-time musical companions on guitars and balafon; together, the four musicians produce music that is remarkable for its sophistication, conversation, and the art of weaving sound into a cascade of almost liquid lacework.  At Peace relies on the strong bond that unites its musicians while it is also an adventurous record, full of chance encounters and acrobatics.  The peace celebrated here is the peace of the brave, of musicians who aren’t afraid to rub shoulders with the unexpected and unprecedented.

With their enthusiastically eclectic mix of pan-African styles and Tonga rhythms, Mokoomba have propelled themselves into the vanguard of fresh new talent emerging from Zimbabwe, brandishing a banner of hope and pursuing their goals with determination and abundant talent.  They hail from a small village in the Victoria Falls region, home to the Tonga-speaking minority.  With their album 'Rising Tide' they have intrigued and surprised music critics across the globe, and earned themselves invitations by everyone from WOMAD to Jools Holland, as well as a whole ream of awards.  Rather than copying the mainstream, their music is fresh & original, exploiting Tonga rhythms offset with Congolese grooves and dashes of rap, ska and latin.  Mokoomba has been hailed as the most impressive band Zimbabwe has produced in recent memory, while the electrifying intensity of lead singer Mathias Muzaza has been described as a 'spinal experience'.  A rollercoaster ride of raw energy & youthful passion.
